The portion went to non-profit organizations that target K-3 literacy programs
In 2024, the trustees of the Ballantine Family Fund awarded $343,500 to nonprofit organizations in Southwest Colorado through the quarterly grant application process, as well as additional Core Value grants.
This past year marked the 67th anniversary of the Ballantine Family Fund’s support for organizations in many different areas, including arts and culture, the environment, animal protection, education, human services and youth. .
The Family Fund awarded $303,500 to 107 nonprofit organizations in Southwest Colorado through quarterly grant rounds. The total donation was $2,836 – a 19% increase from 2023.
The trustees approved grants in all five counties that make up Southwest Colorado, as well as areas outside of Southwest Colorado with organizations that support the region. Districts served include Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, and San Juan.
Literacy remains a priority for the Ballantine Family Fund in 2024, reflecting its ongoing commitment to improving education and training. Ballantine family trustees awarded $40,000 in unsolicited grants to support nonprofit organizations that focus on K-3 literacy programs. These grants provided $10,000 to the Ignacio Community Library, Ruby M. Sisson Memorial Library, Southwest La Plata Library District and Dolores Library District.
By category, the Ballantine Family Fund awarded:
- Animal Protection – $10,500, representing 3% of total donations
- Arts & Culture – $75,600, representing 25% of total donations
- Education – $87,500, representing 29% of total donations
- Environment – ​​$15,000, representing 5% of total donations
- Human Services – $72,400, representing 24% of total donations
- Youth – $31,500, representing 10% of total donations
- Other – $11,000, representing 4% of total donations
In the district, the Ballantine Family Fund awarded:
- Archuleta – $28,000, representing 9% of the grant amount
- Dolores – $8,500, representing 3% of the giving amount
- La Plata – $161,500, representing 53% of total donations
- Montezuma – $79,000, representing 26% of the total supply
- San Juan – $11,000, representing 4% of the total supply
- Other – $15,500, representing 5% of total donations

The Ballantine Family Fund was established in 1957 by Morley C. Ballantine and Arthur A. Ballantine Jr., former owners of the The Durango Heraldprovides financial assistance to non-profit organizations that improve the quality of life in Southwest Colorado.
Richard G. Ballantine is the foundation’s president and chairman of the board of Ballantine Communications Inc., the Herald’s parent company.
Trustees include Karen Sheek of Cortez, and most recently Ellen Roberts and Martha Minot of Durango.
The Ballantine family members are Elizabeth Ballantine and Helen Ballantine Healy, Richard’s siblings, and members of the next generation, Christopher and David Ballantine. Other third generations attend from time to time.
The Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado serves as the grant manager for the Ballantine Family Fund. The Community Foundation assists with non-profit management and financial evaluation.
“The trustees of the Ballantine Family Fund are committed to supporting the nonprofit sector in Southwest Colorado,” said Briggen Wrinkle, executive director of the Community Foundation, in a news release. “They know that non-profit organizations are the heart of the community, making this place a great place to live, work, and play.”
